Due to ongoing instability and violence in the areas of Goma and North Kivu, the U.S. Department of State has issued a travel warning for the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Department’s ability to assist U.S. citizens traveling in these areas is extremely limited.
While travel insurance benefits like non-medical evacuation may offer some protection for travelers, they should know that other benefits like trip cancellation and interruption may not cover acts of war or civil or political unrest.
The U.S. Department of State reports that travelers continue to be the victims of frequent illegal detainment and bribes by security forces and those posing as security forces.
The Department advises those already traveling in the Democratic Republic of Congo to avoid taking photos in front of government buildings and traveling alone at night. Travelers should also be wary of gangs who may steal cash and personal belongings.
