How do I decide on primary verses secondary coverage for travel insurance?

When purchasing travel insurance, you will need to decide whether you need primary or secondary medical cover. In the event of a medical claim or problem, primary coverage generally ignores your other insurance and pays the claim, if it’s for a covered service. Secondary coverage requires that you first go to your primary plan (for example, Humana) file a claim and request payment. You may then process a claim with the secondary insurer for the unpaid balance. You may be required to pay a deductible with your primary insurer.  If you have good primary health insurance, secondary coverage is probably adequate for most travel and may be less expensive. If you have a high deductible with your primary insurer or wish to avoid filing claims with multiple carriers, you may wish to consider primary cover.
