US vacationers let taste buds plan the itinerary

US vacationers are letting their taste buds do the talking when it comes to planning their break, according to new research.

A study by the Travel Industry Association in partnership with Gourmet and the International Culinary Tourism Association found that food and wine were the deciding factors for one in five travelers.

And this has driven a trend in vacation rentals, according to Justin Halloran, the vice president of HomeAway.

He said: “Niche travel is booming because travelers crave authentic experiences tailored to their likes and interests.

“Using homeowners’ advice and home amenities, vacation rentals make it easy for food-lovers to leave the annoying ‘tourist’ label at the door and experience each destination’s unique culture.”
