Technology leaders confident of higher H1B visa cap

America’s technology industry is confident that the Senate will vote to boost the H1B visa quota for foreign engineers and programmers seeking work in the USA.

A spokesperson for the Information Technology Industry Council (Itic) said that business leaders had been “heartened by the progress made” in Congress on the immigration reform, albeit protracted.

One of the fundamental amendments expected in the comprehensive restructuring of America’s immigration infrastructure is a significant increase in the number of H1B visas issued to skilled workers applying to work in the USA.

At present, the States annually issues 65,000 H1B visas to the most employable overseas talent, primarily in the IT sector.

On the first day of applications this year, however, the federal government was deluged with over 150,000 submissions from foreign minds hoping to secure work in the USA.

James Ratchford, spokesperson for the Itic, said that technology business leaders were “confident” the immigration overhaul that president George Bush is promising will include a significant boost in the number of H1B visas.
