Holidaymakers urged to seek lost luggage cover

Holidaymakers should ensure their travel insurance policy covers them for lost luggage, since estimates show that one in five travellers have their bags mishandled when flying.

Research by swiftcover.com shows that 22 per cent of Brits flying overseas face the prospect of arriving at their holiday destination without their belongings.

More than half of those affected have to wait over 24 hours before they see their baggage again and one in 20 victims spend their entire trip without their cases, or never see them again, according to the insurer’s study.

In addition to the inconvenience and frustration of misplaced luggage, costs associated with replacing lost bags forced fliers to shell out an estimated £212 million last year, expenses that could have been avoided with a suitable travel insurance policy.

“With over two million Brits having forked out £100 on replacing their lost luggage, it’s never been more important to take out travel insurance to ensure their mistake doesn’t end up costing them,” said Craig Staniland of swiftcover.com.

Statistics from the Association of European Airlines reveal that the world’s 24 leading carriers mishandled 5.6 million items of luggage in 2006.
