Pre-Existing Conditions and Travel Insurance

When shopping for a travel insurance policy, make sure to identify if pre-existing conditions will be covered.  A pre-existing condition is an illness or medical condition that existed before a policy’s effective date.  Most travel insurance carriers have specific criteria in order to extend coverage for pre-existing conditions.  This can be either a time limit from the initial trip deposit date in which the guest must purchase a policy, or requiring that the policy be bought before the final trip payment is made.  Also, see if there is a look back period.  This means that a medical condition will not be considered pre-existing if it has remained stable for a set amount of time.  Always refer to the certificate of insurance for details.
